Art Department
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Mrs Lindsey Middleton
The Art Department aims to develop in the boys an understanding of the visual world around them:
- To acquire the skills needed to record and respond through direct experience, using observation and imagination.
- To learn through the use of a variety of media and processes, the language of line, shape, tone, form, colour, texture and pattern.
- To develop an understanding of the work of artists, past and present, and to apply this knowledge to their own work.
- To encourage an appreciation of the Art of other cultures and civilisations.
From Nursery to Year 2, Art is taught in the classrooms by Class Teachers. Years 3 to 8 are taught in a purpose-built studio, Years 3 and 4 by their Form Teachers and Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 by an Art Specialist.
Projects undertaken include subjects such as: portraiture, still life drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, batik, tie-dye, block printing, lino cutting, and collage. Many of these activities are supported by regular visits to galleries and exhibitions.
Our aim is that through this work, every boy will develop an enthusiasm for the visual arts, that whatever his innate talent, he will enjoy the opportunity to be creative and will feel a sense of pride and achievement in all that he produces.
