Games Department

HEAD OF P.E.

Mr Tom Johnson

Northwood Prep Physical Education and Games department aims to promote physical activity, physical development and a healthy lifestyle to all pupils.

There are two full time subject specialists in the department who, between them teach all children throughout the Junior and Senior schools.

In the Junior school, pupils participate in a variety of activities and the main aim is for all children to develop a love of participating in and enjoying physical activity. Individual creative developments are fostered within the Dance and Gymnastics program and the concept of working as a team is constantly encouraged through a variety of Games activities.

In Senior school, pupils participate in two games afternoons each week in addition to their class time tabled P.E. lessons. Games are seasonal with Rugby Union being played in the Autumn Term, Soccer and Cross Country in the Spring Term, and Cricket and Athletics in the Summer term. The majority of school staff, specialist sports coaches and visiting professional players are fully involved in the coaching program and the quality teaching of sport takes a high priority within the school.

There is a competitive fixture list in our major games from the Under 8 age group upwards and several boys have achieved county standard in a variety of sports.

Those who are not initially selected for school teams participate in a variety of award schemes such as the R.F.U. proficiency award, the F.A. Soccer award, and the English Schools' Athletics scheme to name just a few. This reinforces the departments ethos of 'sports for all' and not just elite performers.

The sports facilities are second to none with pupils benefiting from a large sports hall, a floodlit Astroturf and several acres of playing fields and these put to good use in extra curricular clubs before and after school where a myriad of other sports such as Archery, Badminton, Hockey, Judo, Rifle Shooting and Basketball are offered.
