MODERN OUTLOOK

At the heart of an education at Northwood Prep. is a unique blend of past tradition, present best practice and future vision, to deliver the very best of all worlds to our pupils. Our curriculum extends National Curriculum boundaries. A great deal of emphasis is placed on core subjects — English, Mathematics and Science — with History, Geography, Classical and Modern Languages surrounding this core. Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education are important components as well as Religious Studies, which is designed to give meaning and context to our own culture as well as the culture of others. Design Technology and Information and Communication Technology provide vital, modern skills in an age of great change. Our computer room is superbly equipped with a network of fast, multimedia machines with ISDN internet connections, complete with video-conferencing facility. The commitment to excellence is shown by our investment in the very best facilities, equipment and staff.

Our modern outlook is emphasised by the quality of relationships we foster. Northwood Prep. has a fine reputation for the high quality of pastoral care. Class teachers in Junior School and Form Teachers in Senior School monitor social and academic progress, keeping parents and colleagues fully informed. Each child in Senior Schools belongs to one of four Houses. This helps develop a sense of team spirit as well as providing a framework for discipline. House points are awarded to reinforce good work or behaviour and minus marks for inappropriate actions. If there is a serious breach of our disciplinary code, a red card may be issued which informs parents immediately of the situation. In extreme cases, the Headmaster reserves the right to suspend the child from attending school. Discipline is firm but consistently clear and is based on our “Fair Rules” which have been agreed by staff, pupils and parents alike.

There are clear lines of communication between home and school. We keep parents fully informed about school news through a regular newsletter. Detailed reports enable parents to stay closely involved in their son’s progress. Parents’ Evenings are held regularly. These helpful sessions encourage the partnership process to thrive, enabling us to work together to reward achievement and to cultivate best efforts. Speech Day is the culmination of the year’s accomplishments and is a tremendously enjoyable occasion.
