Headmaster Writes

Snow Day

A warm welcome to all our visitors who have come to school for our 4+ assessments.
Many thanks to all those who contributed to our Education Sunday service at St. John’s Church on Sunday. It was wonderful to hear the choir at full strength as well as the string orchestra, with fantastic individual contributions from Greshan Rasiah and Peter Ladd.

PeterOur 13+ results are beginning to come through and we are in line for another bumper crop of results. We must congratulate Peter [pictured right] and Shrenik [beneath] on their fantastic achievements in winning academic Shrenikscholarships to Merchant Taylors’ School. In addition, Peter was awarded the Champniss Music Scholarship, Shrenik won a music bursary and Greshan Rasiah also won a Music Scholarship.

We also must say a special well done to Shrenik for successfully completing the European Computer  Driving Licence award at the school. This is an internationally recognised adult computer qualification and Shrenik is the first pupil to complete the course before the end of Year 8.

If you did not receive an e-mail or text to inform you that the school was closed last Thursday, please would you up-date the school office with any new contact details.

  Kind regards, as always

New shirt for Italy Rugby TourAfter the recent spate of entrance and scholarship exams & interviews, there is now the keenly anticipated wait for results. Y8 will receive a record of 13+ results once they are all declared. Y7 will receive setting information by post. Education Sunday at St John’s Church, Northwood showcased our Senior Choir and talented soloists Peter Ladd (Y8) & Greshan Rasiah (Y8). The Valentines’s disco ends half-term on a suitably  communal note as we welcome girls from far and wide. Coaches Mr Johnson and Mr Evans have been giving stirring pre-match team talks and we are all looking forward to School Captain David Randall’s match report! Our runners competed in the regional prep. schools U13 cross-country race and Durshan Mistry (Y8) was our first to finish. Congratulations to Y7 pupils Jack Bonnamy, Karan Gupta and Arjun Rajani  for successfully completing the first module of their ECDL . Best wishes to our rugby squad for their tour to Italy this half-term and thanks to Allied Irish Bank for their generous sponsorship of the tour shirts pictured above. The school art competition is something for the boys to think about during their week’s break and we are looking forward to ‘Book Week’ and a Maths ‘Countdown’ challenge on our return.

Pilgrims

As we approach half-term there have been two excellent performances by Years 5 and 6 of ‘Pilgrim’, written in 1978 by Michael Hurd to celebrate the tercentenary of the publication of ‘Pilgrims Progress’ by John Bunyan. Thanks to Mr Griffiths for all his effort and to the staff for their support. Education Sunday, with the theme of slavery, was a success at St John’s Church in Northwood, where the Senior Choir sung beautifully and there were some excellent individual performances by Greshan Rasiah, Y8S, & Peter Ladd, Y8W. Well done to all who performed, to the parents who turned up and to Mr  Griffiths for his work with the boys. There has also been the entertaining Year 6, 7 and 8 disco attended by our boys and some local girls schools. In sport there has been football against Thorpe House, Davenies, Gayhurst, and Belmont with mixed results. The most notable achievement was from the U8’s who won the plate competition at the tennisSt Piran’s tournament. Well done! Reports on these matches can be found in the sports news. The U11 cross country team represented the school at the IAPS area cross country meeting. All the boys ran well and Andrew MacLean, 5K, was our first runner home in the U11 age group with Charlie Borralho, 6F, closely behind him. Thanks to Mr Johnson and all the games staff for their hard work selecting & coaching the teams.  Congratulations go to Andrew MacLean, 5K, & Jonathan Shwartz-Briskin, 5T, for their recent  success at an U12’s tennis tournament. Together, they won the doubles and Andrew was runner-up in the singles. Congratulations go to Bhavik Mehta, 5K, for passing the first  module of the challenging European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) course at school last week. This is a superb achievement. Finally, I’d like to wish everyone a happy and restful half term.

Junior School

We were thrilled that so many boys and their parents took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. During assembly the other week, all of the budding ornithologists showed the rest of the school the birds they had observed and what they had learned. We have also been listening to a CD of different bird calls and watching video clips of various garden birds on the RSPB website. Year 2 visited the Florence Nightingale Museum this week, and once again, had a great day out whilst learning so much about Florence Nightingale, a very interesting figure in nursing and Victorian history. More details of their visit will be included in the next newsletter.
We are all looking forward to Book Week after half term and there are many exciting events lined up to promote the joy of reading, including a visit from An Vrombaut, children’s author and illustrator, and a performance by Aesop’s Touring Theatre Company.
We hope that all the boys and their families have a very restful half-term holiday.

sports news

A whole host of fixtures have taken place in the last few weeks. At the end of January the U10 A and B team took on Thorpe House and emerged with an A team victory courtesy of a Morgan Kilmartin goal and a Dilen Sheth goal earned the B’s a draw. On the same day our U11B team grabbed a 2-0 win away at Thorpe House. Savan Shah and Joseph Silva grabbed a goal each in an excellent performance. All age groups were in action the following week against Davenies. Our U9’s both lost, although the B’s were very unlucky as they went down 3-2, with Dominic O’Tuminu grabbing two goals. Our 1st XI team had a hard fought draw, Joshua Marks the scorer of a great goal away at Davenies. Most impressive performance of the week was from the Under 10A team. They played superb football and were hugely unlucky to go down 1-0. Last week the U9 A team beat Gayhurst convincingly 4-2. Luke Withell returned from injury to score two goals and Neel Bhalla also netted. The B team played very well in earning a 1-1 draw, and the C’s lost. Our Senior boys found the going tough against Belmont. The 1st XI battled hard against Belmont before going down 4-2 and our 2nd’s emerged with great credit in their 2-1 defeat. Final mention must go to our U8A squad who emerged from U8 Football Tournamentthe St Piran’s tournament as plate winners, winning three matches and losing only one match all tournament, and that was to the eventual winners Gayhurst. Congratulation to the boys. Photos from the tournament please click here. Full Squad: Cameron Pegler, Dylan Patel, Roman Mitra, Shaan Kara, Finley Kilmartin, Matthew Jacobs, Anthony Nwokenna.

Congratulations to all boys in Year 5 and 6 who have been wowing parents with their performances of Michael Hurd’s cantata Pilgrim based on John Bunyan’s classic A Pilgrim’s Progress.

Congratulations also to the Senior Choir and String Orchestra who were representing Northwood Prep at Education Sunday.  The choir and orchestra performed magnificently, showcasing the musical talents of our boys.  Greshan Rasiah and Peter Ladd (Year 8) also  played solos to a very high standard.  The clergy and congregation were very appreciative of their contribution to the service.

We also recognise Peter Ladd on his recent success in his Guitar Grade 6 exam, passing with merit.

the company

Last term the Year 7 Club, The Company, had a very profitable sale of Ipod cases.  The original stock was kindly donated by Mr & Mrs Patel (Tejas, Year 7).  After a successful trading day, £100 was donated to a local charity, selected by the Patel's, the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
