Theatre Appeal: “Act Now!”
I am pleased to say that our waiting period for the construction works on the Theatre is coming to an end and that I expect work to have started on this construction by the time we come back for the start of the Summer term. The works will take approx. 50 weeks.
You will remember that the Theatre is one piece of a three part development
programme. We also intend to refurbish the pavilion to make it our new music school and also extend the changing rooms at the sports hall to accommodate all of our senior school pupils [plus away teams]. The Governors have decided that this will be a two phase development [Theatre first, followed by the other two projects] as there is a limit to the resources that we have readily available. There are clear advantages in running the projects concurrently and so we will be
appealing to current parents and friends of Northwood Prep in order to raise the additional necessary funds [£500k.] I shall be writing to you about the launch of the appeal soon. Kind regards

They have enjoyed a dedicated study skills session at School to focus the mind. Years 7 & 8 were also treated to an illuminating and explosive chemistry lecture by Doctor Sie from Harrow School. All boys will receive an end of term Progress Report and we look forward to seeing parents and pupils at Target Setting on Tuesday, 24th April. Revision packs will be available at this time. Happy holidays in the interim.
KS2 News
As the end of term approaches there have been many events for the boys at school. For year 5 & 6 there was the Beale Clear Speaking Competition, won by Vivek Midha 6F. Y6 participated in a Study Skills morning, where they leant techniques to help them revise. They had an explosive Chemistry lecture from Eric Sie who is a master at Harrow School. Y5 had a Sound Talk from Dr David Sharp. There were music recitals for Years 3 to 6 and Y4 were invaded by Vikings. Years 3 & 4 have been regularly rehearsing ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ for their production in the last week of term. Years 3 to 6 had House football, where all the boys represent their house, football fixtures and the U10’s were runners up in the recent NP tournament. Phew! On top of all this there were the everyday lessons. Thanks to all the staff that organised these fantastic events for the boys. Sport is very important to boys and on the website under my article in the newsletter you will find links which are useful to help develop their skills further outside of school.

Finally I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and Happy Easter.
Junior School News
We hope that you have enjoyed looking at the photographs of Book Week on the school website. The photographs are so vibrant and yet they only begin to show what an inspiring week it was. Many thanks to the parents for helping all the boys look so fantastic on the book character dressing-up day. Year 1 have been very busy in the last few weeks and have been to visit the Toy Museum and Holy Trinity Church. The staff at the Toy Museum told us that our boys had been extremely well behaved, which is always nice to hear, and Reverend Barlett at Holy Trinity Church gave a wonderful talk about the different parts of a church and what they are for. We were treated to another musical recital this week and we all particularly enjoyed hearing such a variety of instruments being played. We are also looking forward to our Charity Week next week, when we shall all be completing activities based around the number 26, as part of the Children’s Marathon Challenge. Please note, parents, that we are currently collecting both Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers in Junior School so we would be grateful if you could send any vouchers to school.
SATIPS COMPETITION RESULTS
A few weeks ago the boys entered the SATIPS General Knowledge Quiz which is open to all independent schools. This was our first time and the Junior & Senior teams performed admirably. The Junior Team finished 42nd out of 107 schools and the Senior team were 20th out of 65 schools. Individually the highest placed boys were Vivek Midha 13th out of 1600 entries in the Junior section and Peter Ladd 19th out of 900 entries in the Senior section. Congratulations to all the boys who took part. For those back here next year keep reading the paper and books to pick up new snippets of general knowledge.

RUGBY TOUR OF ITALY
During the February half term an U13 rugby squad went for 4 days to Italy to play rugby accompanied by Mr Johnson, Mr Lambden and Mr & Mrs Rice. On the Friday prior to the tour the squad had a training day when Sebastian Taylor, the captain of the Swedish rugby team, came to help. He was very impressed with the way the boy trained and the level of skill. He was pleased to meet Ben Pinsent who is NP’s Swedish player and looks forward to seeing more of him in the future.
Whilst in Italy the squad stayed at a hotel in Simione, which is on the edge of Lake Garda, and near a wonderful 13th century castle. Whilst there the team, who were supported by parents who travelled over from England, played three excellent matches against Fiumicello (drew 12 – 12), Petrarca Padova (lost 10 – 40) & Valpolicello (won 35 – 10) and visited the beautiful cities of Verona & Venice. It was a wonderful & enjoyable experience for all involved. Below are a couple of quotes from boys who were on the tour.
Peter Sinderberry: My most memorable moment was the whole trip. I really enjoyed having a break with all my school friends and having the experience of foreign rugby.
Alex Douch: My most memorable was scoring a try on our final game and it was such a great team try. I thought it was the try of the tour.

art competition

ART COMPETITION VIEWING
Parents are cordially invited to view the School Art Competition with their son in the foyer of the Sir Christopher Harding Building next Monday & Tuesday 3.50-5.15pm.
Once again another very successful Art Competition, and a valuable showcase for our talented young artists. The subject, `Underwater', emerged as the clear favourite, the other choices being, `My favourite sport', `An Animal" and,`My favourite holiday destination'. Judging an event such as this is always hard, particularly this year as the standard of work was so high. My thanks go to Miss Bricknall, Miss Hunter, Miss Edwards and Miss Bangert for helping me to make some very difficult decisions. The winning entries are:
Y3&4
lst place Kypros Donegan, 2nd place Shamil Shah, 3rd place Tara Armstrong
Highly commended: Govind Grewal, Kieran Patel, Kellan Shelani, Sachin Kucheria, Nikil Shah.
Y5&6
lst place Alex McCormick, 2nd place Aaron Ahya, 3rd place Tsukasa Yamano
Highly commended: Oliver Redman, Amar Anand, Bhavik Mehta, Akash Roy, James Worthington, Daniel Sieradzki, Dilen Sheth, Rishav Shah.

viking invasion
On Monday 19" March, Northwood Prep was invaded by Vikings! Thorulf Hammersson and his wife Gudrum spent the day with Year 4 who had all dressed up as bloodthirsty Vikings. The day was an integral part of the History studies both classes have been undertaking this term about Vikings. We started with a talk from Thorulf about Viking seafarers, raiders, explorers and traders. Gudrum then informed us about home life in Viking times and how to handle everyday objects. The boys also took part in a Viking quiz and the morning ended with Thorulf giving a demonstration of how to make Viking chain mail armour and also how to mint Viking coins. In the afternoon Thorulf talked to the boys about a range of Viking armour & weapons including the spear, sword and battle-axe. Then Thorulf demonstrated his skill with a sword and battle-axe, attacking a melon with great gusto! Some of the boys had the chance to try on Thorulf's chain mail armour and to find out just how heavy it was! The boys tried their hand at Viking spear wrestling and finally a mock battle. Both forms faced each other in a shield wall and on the given command attacked each other with tremendous war cries and much enthusiasm. The battle honours were even and it ended in a draw. We all declared the day a great success and are now busy writing our own Viking reports.
news day

After much impatient waiting and considerable hard work, both the Newspaper and the Website teams sent off the final copy of their product to the TES Newsday judges; who I’m sure were anticipating the successor of last year’s over-all newspaper winner: The Core. Fears of the newspaper not being finished on time were subsided with thanks to everyone who spent time slaving away to proof read the various articles. Images and layout were hardly an issue; just fitting the space that seemed to cause problems for both projects. A special thank you should go to Mr. Smith, Mr. Newton and Mrs. Smith for all their guidance and assistance, Mrs. Lee for giving her assistance with the printing and not to forget Mrs. Smith for letting us all use her Learning Resource Centre- a huge risk! Nobody knows what twenty seven thirteen year-olds could get up to! The only difficult part left is awaiting the result and whether any of us can stay calm until we find out how well our marvellous Aurora and The Nexus do.
beale clear speaking competition
This week saw the culmination of both the Junior and Senior Beale Clear Speaking Competitions. After weeks of careful preparation and recitals in their English lessons and house meetings, the finalists and their reserves performed in front of a full assembly. The standard of recitals from Year 5 and 6 was most impressive, providing the judges with an unenviable task. Those eventually placed included Jake Gelernter (4th), Alex McCormick (3rd) and James Fowler (2nd) with Vivek Midha winning the Junior Beale after a clear and expressive rendition of 'The Listeners' by Walter de la Mare. The Senior Beale was also of a very high standard throughout. Oliver Gamp, Greshan Rasiah and David Randall proved inseparable, finishing joint runners-up with their Shakespearean contributions, but the final winner was Ammar Malik with a moving performance of 'Bury Me in a Free Land' by Francis Harper.
Congratulations to Vivek, Ammar and all those who took part.
tremendous bang
This week Dr. Sie, from Harrow School came to give a Chemistry lecture to Y6-Y8. After a general Chemistry introduction, Dr. Sie conducted several thrilling experiments. He showed how dry ice sublimed and then used the dry ice to make a liquid mixture with a temperature of -78oC. He used this to freeze a banana. After this he used a soapy solution to make bubbles of methane, which he set on fire. He followed this with rocketing bottles and blowing the lid off a coffee tin! There is no question, however, that the exploding balloons were the favourite experiment. Each balloon was filled with a metal salt (as a spray) and hydrogen. A flame was used to make each balloon explode, producing different coloured flames according to the metal spray inside. Last of all Dr. Sie lit a balloon containing a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen and this produced a tremendous bang, sending shockwaves down the hall! Thank you Dr. Sie and Dr. Davies for arranging this fascinating event.
