Headmaster Writes

"Act Now"We were treated to a fantastic treat last Friday when children from the Senior School plus old boys put together a celebration of words, music and poetry to launch our Act Now Theatre Appeal. They managed to capture succinctly the essence of what we are trying to do in terms of encouraging new skills and confidence through the performing arts. The quality of performances were breathtaking. I hope to be able to send out a dvd soon of the event for you to keep as a souvenir.

Meanwhile, all the boys looked suitably cool in their t-shirts and jeans. I’ll write about forthcoming events in the next newsletter. A special thank you too for those who have rapidly responded—the appeal has topped £60k already BUT we do need your help —ACT NOW!

KS3 News

After a fabulous ski course in the French Alps and the Watford FC football camp in the Easter holidays, boys have returned to glorious weather and to summer sports. Congratulations to Peter Sinderberry who is Captain of Cricket and Ammar Malik who is Captain of Tennis. Parents are warmly   invited to support school matches as well as Sports Day on Friday 8tth June.

The term began with target review and setting. Revision guidance was also made available. Year 7 had their Geography Field Studies meeting, the  theatre appeal was launched and the pupil showcase of drama, poetry and music captured the imagination. As usual, all pupils will sit their internal school exams before half-term. Pupils intending to miss school during the exam period (eg Shavuot ) need to inform us as soon possible. Parents will be sent a ‘Record of Results’ after the break.

Finally, congratulations to the following boys who have been elected as Form Captains: Ammar Malik (7B), Max Kellar (7W), Nikhil Fatania (8MS), Akaash Patel (8RW).

KS2 News

Welcome back and I hope everyone had an enjoyable break either in this country or abroad. Prior to the start of the term, there were successful target settings followed by the excellent ‘Pupils Showcase’ on the Friday, which was an extravaganza of acting, music & speaking. At this the Year 3 & Year 4 boys re-performed their production of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ which again was magnificent with wonderful costumes, props, singing and acting. Congratulations and thanks must go to the Year 3 & 4 staff for all their  behind the scenes help, Mrs Turnbull for helping with the beautiful scenery and especially Mr Griffiths who managed to bring the best out of the boys.

I would like to thank all parents in Years 4, 5 & 6 for attending their respective visit meetings. The Year 6 boys are off to Calvados in France, Year 5 to Skern Lodge and Year 4 to Stone Farm which are both in Devon.

Congratulations go to Bhavik Mehta (5K) who on Saturday 28th April 2007 performed in the Harrow Young Musicians Extravaganza 2007 at the Royal Albert Hall where he played the cello, to Rishav Shah (5T) for winning the Hertfordshire U10’s Badminton singles during the Easter holiday and to Luke Withell (4H) for winning a man of the match trophy from his club. He was also a member, along with Krishen Shah (4B), of the team who were the U9’s League Shield winners. Krishen was also voted the best 7 a side footballer between the U6 and U10 teams for his club.

Congratulations to Rohan Bindra(3B), Tej Thakkar(3B), Dylan Patel (3E), Patrick Rondel (3E), Freddie Minihan (4B), Achuthan Baburaj & Kushil Patel (4B), Daniel Green (4H), Kellan Ghelani 4H), Bhavik Mehta (5K), Dominic Stern (5K), Jonathan Shwartz-Briskin (5T), Zohaib Arain (5T), Charlie Borralho (6F), Thomas Marsh (6F), Andrew Khamba (6G) and Alistair Ho (6G) for being voted Form Captain and Vice Form Captains this term.

Junior School News

Sun shadeThe most exciting news in Junior School has been the arrival of the Shade Sails in the Junior School playground, which has been very timely with all the sunny weather we have been having lately. I hope that you agree that the Shade Sails are not only beautiful but are of great benefit to the children by providing some shade when we play outside. Our new air conditioning units in the corridors of Junior School have also been a very welcome addition this term.

Reception and Year 1 have already stared rehearsing for ‘Maui’s Story’, which is based on a traditional New Zealand story that has been written and composed by Miss Studman. A letter about tickets for this production has been sent home today. Y2 will be performing in the joint Northwood Schools’ Concert after half term but they have already started learning the songs in their lessons with Mr. Edwards. We have had one of our termly Drama Workshops this week and it was, once again, a delight to see the children respond so positively.

Please remember to send any remaining Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers to school to help us fulfil our aim of getting some more digital cameras and some playtime equipment. Finally, a very sincere thanks to those of you who supported the launch of our ‘Act Now’ appeal on Friday as it is our children in Junior School and Nursery who will gain the most from these exciting building projects.

ski 2007

Ski Group 2007On 25th March 30 boys plus staff departed NP for Alpe d’Huez. Leaving school we travelled to Stansted and flew to Grenoble in France. The journey  up the mountain was picturesque as usual, complete with 21 hairpin bends! We soon familiarised ourselves with the hotel and resort before our ski fit session and dinner. Early to bed so we were bright eyed and ready for our ski lessons.

Over the following six days all boys were skiing proficiently and some were mastering the techniques with style and accomplishing any slope presented to them. A special mention  goes to David Randall who was the all-round skier and tourist of the week and will be awarded the Peter’s Skiing Cup on Speech day. The skiing conditions were absolutely superb: some fresh powder snow during one night (14cm) also added to the boys’ skiing experience. Après ski activities were wide-ranging and fun including ice-skating, bum boarding, a disco, a quiz, visit to the arcade and bingo. Photos of the visit can be seen on the website under the site map or visit section.

WATFORD FOOTBALL WEEK

OscarWe were delighted to welcome again this year, the Football Coaching Team from  Watford Community Sports and Education Trust.  It was a perfect week with blue skies and sunshine, excellent organisation and expert  coaching.  Our boys loved it and there are great photos on our website.

Watford Football Club sent a young player, Jordan Parks, to talk to the boys and he certainly impressed us all and inspired the boys.
I am sure you will be delighted to know, too, that we raised £500 for the charity ‘Friends of O.S.C.A.R’ of which Adrian Boothroyd, Watford Football Club’s Manager, has recently become a patron. This is a charity that supports children with brain and spinal tumours. Oscar the dog, seen in the photo, is the charity’s mascot. A huge thank-you to everyone who was involved in this very special week.

CHESS NEWS

On Saturday 17th March seven schools (Colet Court, Northwood College, Northwood Prep, Westminster Under, The Harrodian, The Mall and Rokeby) competed in all play all tournaments at The Harrodian school, Barnes. The chess was hard fought but played in an excellent spirit and the NP team came sixth with the boys gaining valuable experience.

The four boys from NP who took part were Kavan Kothari, Kyan Karashah, Roman Mitra and Andrew Khamba. They all performed admirably winning at least one game each and showing great fighting spirit. Kyan was a real star winning 4 out of 5 of his games. A full report of the Spring Term Chess can be found on the website (site map—information).

"CHICKEN LITTLE"

ChickAnother year, another clutch!  Once again, the boys are breathlessly watching the progress of a new batch of eggs as they hatch (very slowly) in their incubator. The eggs arrived on Monday and have settled in so well in Science lab 1 that they seem disinclined to hatch. However, with luck we will have some fluffy yellow chicks by the time you are reading this. The boys are well versed in the hatching process and can knowledgably point out the “pipping” eggs and the egg tooth on the emerging beak. As ever, anyone wishing to start their own egg production business is welcome to come and choose some chicks next week. We will keep you posted.

NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIR - EASTER 2007

We arrived at Banbury and went straight into learning our new songs. Our daily routine involved seven and a half hours of singing with social activities at the end of the day. We learnt eight songs, seven on our own and a Scottish folk song to sing with another choir. On the concert day we went to Birmingham, had our final rehearsal and changed into our concert uniform. Time flew and before I knew it, it was all over. It was an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

A WINTER WALK IN THE WOODS

In the woods there is moss covering the trees like soft, fluffy slugs,
An innocent tree vigorously yanked out by a merciless storm,
Broken roots sluggishly entwined together,
And a collapsed tree slowly tilting to form a perfectly natural drawbridge.

In the woods an amicable, blue tit sings and chirps flawlessly,
a flock of twittering birds fly harmoniously,
An individual bird flies from branch to branch like a solitary squirrel that clambers,
a group of minute, twittering birds fly simultaneously like a huge billowing sail on a very windy day.

In  the woods the moat that once protected the Manor of the Moor now is a gently flowing stream where wildlife  flourishes,
A muddy, murky stream moves only when the rain gently ripples it, the rain continuously patters against the leaves, the thin, long green reeds bend lifelessly in the river.

In the woods there is a heap of spikey brambles with much unexpected life within,
The remains of the Manor of the Moor are scattered around like stones,
Cherry blossom trees start on their long journey through life,
As I ended my walk in the woods one winter afternoon.
