Headmaster Writes

New Table tennis table and courtsWelcome back to the new term, the start of the 97th year of the school’s illustrious history. We are already looking forward to our centenary celebrations in 2010 with many exciting events in the pipeline.

We congratulate Mr Johnson and Miss Hunter on their recent wedding as well as to Miss Stuart [now Mrs. Jennings] and extend our best wishes for the future. In terms of staff changes, Mr. Mlotshwa has now left us and we welcome Mr. Felise Ah-Ling onto the staff as rugby coach and assistant in the Maths Department.  Mr. Ah-Ling is a graduate from Auckland University. Mrs. Nicole Pollock will be teaching RE in Key Stage 2 as well as assisting with French. We say goodbye next week to Mrs. Hellens who will be retiring from her position as receptionist and will be moving to Crete. We are grateful to Margaret for her work over the last three and a half years. We like to celebrate the  achievements of all our pupils in as many ways as possible. If you prefer your son not to be featured in our publications— e.g. if you do not wish your son’s name or picture to be included in any of the newsletters (including yearly magazine) or on the website— please let me know in writing by 23.9.07 at the latest.

Kind regards, as always

KS3 News

There are no new boys or members of staff to welcome as such but Year 7 have all settled quickly. Clubs, life skills, instrumental lessons and learning support have all resumed together with a full academic timetable. Rugby trials, team selection for Fantasy Football, Year 8 interview practice and fieldwork projects have been the early preoccupations of pupils and staff alike. The new theatre is taking shape and the third outdoor table tennis  table has been well received and used.

Pupils have received badges to go with their positions of responsibility.

Congratulations to pupils selected as Librarians, Ambassadors or House Officers. N. Donegan and A. Malik are the School Captains, S. Kelion is Head Librarian, T. Mistry is Head Chorister and A. Douch is Captain of Rugby.

For the record, the following boys have been elected as Form Captains for the Autumn Term: S. Shah (7B), K. Saujani (7W), M. Blackney (8S) and A. Green (8W). The final accolades go to our Year 8 Golfers for winning the prestigious ‘Stowe Putter’ tournament in August. We enjoyed seeing Year 7 Parents at the information meeting this week and look forward to your   support of school matches, the termly Communion Service (Fri 21st Sept.) or the Coffee Morning (Fri 28th Sept.).

KS2 News

Welcome back to everyone, also a special welcome to 38 new boys into Y3 and Teepee Princewell (3E), Anish Rajani (3E), Dheeraj Sara (3B) Sammay Unadkat (3B) and Dhian Sara (5K) as new boys to NP, Mr Ah-Ling who will be teaching Rugby this term and Mrs Pollock who is teaching R. E. in Key Stage 2. We also congratulate Mr Johnson & Miss Hunter, now Mrs Johnson and Miss Stuart, now Mrs Jennings, who got married recently.

I would like to thank all Y5 parents who attended the parents’ information meeting on Monday, and remind all Y3 & Y4 parents about their information meetings on 17th & 18th September respectively, starting at  4.30 pm. All boys have ‘Personal Organisers’ to help them record their prep and plan their learning. We ask for parents support in checking homework and signing their organiser every day. Supervised Prep for Y3 & Y4 at school takes place in room 1 and finishes at 4.15pm when the boys will be brought up to the car park. For Y5 to Y8 Supervised Prep is in the Learning Resources Centre and any pupil, who is not collected by 4.30pm, will be taken to Supervised Prep. Parents should report to the School Office if they wish to collect their son before the end of prep at 5.15pm.

Congratulations to Benjamin Stewart (3B), Joseph Stein (3B), Nikhil Shah (3E), Kai Patel (3E), Thomas Goulde (4B), Alexander Mellis (4B), Jai Thakrar (4J), Cameron Pegler (4J), Joseph Davern (5K), Krishen Shah (5K), Gregory Hunt (5T), Shamil Shah (5T), James Fowler (6F), Teshan Wijesuriya (6F), Karan Soni (6J) and Rishav Shah (6J) for being voted Form Captain and Vice Form Captains this term. Congratulations to Rishav Shah (Y6J) for achieving his 1st Dan Junior Black belt and raising money for Leukaemia when he rode 26 miles in a Bikeathon during the summer holiday.

On a couple of more routine matters, please can pupils arrive at school at/or after 8 am in the morning, even when going to clubs. No pupil should be on the premises before 8 am unless they are going to Breakfast Club with Mrs Lee. If there is an occasion when you need to bring your son to school before 8 am, he can go in the Senior School Hall to Breakfast Club. The cost, £5, can be paid directly to Mrs Lee on the morning. As some boys are allergic to nuts or products containing nuts, it is essential that break time snacks do not contain any nuts. Please read the Parents’ Handbook to check which types of snacks are acceptable in school. Thank you for your cooperation in these matters.

Junior School News

juniorWe would like to welcome you all back to the new academic year in Junior School and to extend a very warm welcome to all of the new families to Northwood Prep, including many of you at nursery, in reception, and  Christopher Gardner in Y1H and Veron Shah in Y2P. The term has started very well and we have been really pleased at how well all of the new children have settled into their new routines. We have had very successful information meetings for all four years groups and we are grateful to the parents for attending these events as it really helps to start the new year smoothly. We are also very grateful to the parents for completing the summer holiday homework with their children and we had a lovely assembly this morning where we got to find out about all of the fun outdoor and physical activities your children have carried out. We will very much be focusing on the children’s physical skills this term in Junior School and further details will be coming home shortly. John Harris, our favourite storyteller, is visiting Junior School (and Years 3 and 4) next week and we are all eagerly awaiting his arrival. He has a great tradition of asking all the children to re-tell one of his stories to someone at home in order to preserve the art of storytelling, so please be prepared to ask your son to tell you a story when he comes home on Thursday.

MUSIC

Boys have recommenced their Music Lessons this week and many new boys have been allocated lessons.  As ever the demand for piano lessons is great, however, if you are interested in your son learning an orchestral instrument there are currently vacancies in Brass, Woodwind and Strings.  If you would like to take advantage of these immediate places for Music Lessons please contact me via the school office. Choir Auditions have taken place in Y5 – Y8 and I look forward to working with these new choirs this year as we prepare for the Carol Service. Once again, during the holidays, some boys were representing Northwood Prep on music courses.  Congratulations to Ammar Malik for his work with Harpenden Musicale and Tejas Mistry and James Newman for performing with the National Youth Choir.  Reports on their time are included. stowe putter

stowe putterThe golf team travelled up for the Stowe Putter championships during the summer break. Adam Green, Max Kellar,  Ben Pinsent and  Bradley  Henwood all performed to a pleasing standard. Ben Pinsent was third in the U13’s and won the best morning score and Bradley Henwood came second in the U13’s. “We were all determined to have a good day. Overall it was great and we all had fun”, reports Ben Pinsent. The very pleasing news is that Northwood Prep won the team prize with 100 points. The school will be named on the shield, along with the other great sporting prep schools of Britain who have previously won the competition. Our young sportsmen have proved that we can be counted amongst the most talented in the country.  Very well done boys — we are tremendously proud of you.

cricket news

cricketThis summer holiday Teshan Wijesuriya, Kishan Radia and Thomas Beveridge played for the Eastcote CC U10A cricket team and made it into the final of Middlesex County Cricket Championship. The final was played at Lord's (Nursery Ground) on 5th August. Congratulations to  the boys as their team won the competition beating Bessborough CC by 6 runs in a close fought final,  winning the Sir George (Gubby) Allen Trophy and personal  trophies and mementos on the way.

marathon challenge

All boys in Years 5-8 have been set the ultimate challenge…to run a Marathon! Over the next term boys are invited to clock up a mile at a time and work towards the 26 mile target. Each mile is run during break time and to complete the challenge this will need to be done on average twice a week. So far all boys have started the challenge in their first PE lesson and every one has successfully completed the first mile. A really  encouraging number of boys have made further progress and as we end the first week many boys have clocked up as many as 5 miles! Good luck to all and it would be great to see even more boys join in. We hope to repeat the scheme in the summer and open the challenge up to the younger children as well.

Tesco Vouchers
Please collect the vouchers and send them in with your son. Last year we raised over 12 thousand and we were able to order some free kit for our school.

More music news

National Youth Choir by James Newman and Tejas Mistry
The NYC took place in Reading this August. Each day we practised for six hours and learnt seven songs during our visit. After practice everyday we were very tired but we always had a fun activity at the end. It was a lot of hard work but it paid off in the end, as we sang a concert which sounded amazing. It was a great experience and we really enjoyed ourselves. We hope to come back next year.

Harpenden Musicale Summer Course by Ammar Malik
During the summer holidays I attended the Harpenden Musicale Summer Course. This course is available to all instrumentalists from Grade 3 and above.  We played a wide variety of music, and while hard work, the week was great fun! I highly recommend other boys who learn an orchestral instrument to attend this course, to meet other musicians, make friends and play some fantastic music.

judo

Mr Remfrey, Olympic Silver Judo Medallist and long standing  professional coach at Northwood Prep would like to invite any boys (Y3-Y8) interested in joining his after school club to attend a taster class next week. The session will be held in the sports hall from 4.20pm next Tuesday (18.9.07). Any boys interested can speak to Mr Remfrey afterwards or see Mr Bowman for information.
