Headmaster Writes

Old Boys LunchIt was fantastic to see over a hundred Old Boys and their friends at a special reunion held at the school last weekend [pictured here ]. The event was a huge success with some fun activities including golf, archery, cricket and five a side soccer, culminating in a delicious lunch. Thanks to all our staff who enabled the event to go with such a swing, with particular thanks to Steph Newton, Sue Smith and Fran Nye.
We have now launched our pave the way campaign—a chance to cast our boys’ names in stone in Pave the Waythe walkway to the new theatre [see the form given to your son to-day or on-line on our website]. As you are aware, we are having a very special banquet atJesus College . The deadline for replies is 1st Nov.
After half term we will be welcoming Mrs. Maureen Tyler as our new receptionist. Maureen is presently working in a large medical practice and brings a wealth of skills to her new position. Finally, congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Melly, winners of the Golden Ticket competition and proud owners of a new Peugeot 107.

All best wishes for a restful vacation.

Kind regards, as always

KS3 News

Rugby victories by both the 1st and 2nd XV against Thorpe House and Gayhurst, a scrumptious Cake Sale kindly arranged by the Parents’ Association & the first product launch (Squiggle Pen) by ‘The Company’ (Y7) have been recent school highlights.

Senior School Target Setting was also most informative. Wren House have the narrowest of leads in the House competition at this stage and Thomas Marsh, Arjun Rajani, Saul Kelion and Yaajan Govindia are the first boys in  KS3 to achieve their silver awards for 50 house points.

Thanks to parents for their support of Target Setting. Revision Packs were issued with subject guidance for the forthcoming school exams. There is a dedicated Year 7/8 Study Skills Day on Monday, 29th October to focus the mind.

The School will once again support the Christmas Box and Poppy Appeals with Northwood Prep. representation at the Remembrance Service in Northwood on  Sunday 11th November. Best wishes to our child and adult choristers in their preparation for the Carol Service next half-term. Auditions for Carol Service readers will take place after the November school exams.

KS2 News

Half term has arrived and it was good to see so many parents at target setting this afternoon. This is a very valuable session for pupils, Form Tutors and parents alike. Thank you for giving up your time.
The mufti day and cake sale went very well. Thanks to the parents who helped for all their hard work in organising and running the stalls, and to all of those who supplied the wonderful cakes.
Congratulations go to Kishan Radia for being voted bowler of the season for the U10 team at Eastcote C.C., to Zohaib Arain for passing his Grade 7 in ice skating, Gus Machado for being voted Fullerians U9 Players player of the year. Also congratulations to Shamil Shah Y5 who will receive his Gold certificate for 75 house points and all the boys who have managed to achieve 25 or 50 house points for their bronze or silver certificate.
On more routine matters, please remember that if you need to come into school at any time it is important, for security reasons that you first go to the school office. If you need to leave a message for a teacher, the office will write it down and pass it on.
Please can you remember that only a healthy snack is permitted at break time. Crisps, sweets and any food with chocolate or nuts are not allowed. Thank you and enjoy the break.

VICTORIAN BOY

Story about being a boy in the Victorian times following the Year One visit to Gunnersbury Park Museum.
I am a boy in the Victorian times.
In the morning I have to light the fire. People about five and six had to go down the coal mines to get coal for the fire.  Adults couldn't go down the coal mines because they were too big. You had to leave school at the age of eleven. I fiddled with my pencil whilst the teacher was talking.
The teacher got very cross with me so I had to stand in the corner or the room.
Whilst I was standing in the corner of the room I had to put the finger stocks on.  When it was lunchtime everyone laughed at me. I wasn't  sitting up straight  so I had to go to the corner of the room.  Whilst I was standing in the corner of the room I had to put the back straighteners on.  We didn't play in the playground we could only do drill.  A drill is when the teacher goes one, two, three, four, five, six.

JUNIOR DETECTIVES

Victorian DayA day of being detectives at the National Archives
When we arrived at Kew we met Miss O’Grady. Miss O’Grady showed us the way to the investigating workshop. We all sat on the carpet. Then we went to the tables where we all had a book and a pencil. We had to answer questions. After we had answered seven questions we had to answer this question. Do you think the story of the Great Fire of London was true? I ticked ‘don’t know’ because the information did not exactly tell you that the story was true. Then we had to draw a picture in the magnifying glass. I drew a picture of Samuel Pepys.  After that we got quill pens and we had to write a list for Sir Christopher Wren. The list was of the things Sir Christopher Wren would need to rebuild London. I enjoyed writing with the quill pens. I really enjoyed the centre   because it was fun and a very important place to visit. It’s important because documents from our country’s history are kept there.

eco-schools programme

Eco-teamNorthwood Prep is now part of the eco-schools programme.  The scheme aims to make schools become more environmentally friendly and have less of an impact on the local community. We have recently been awarded the bronze award by eco-schools because we already have a number of schemes running that help the environment.  Here are just a few of the schemes in place:
Paper recycling
Printer cartridges
A wormery was introduced to the school last year.

An Eco-Action Team meets on a fortnightly basis and undertook an Environmental Review of the school.
The short term Action Plan was made up of a number of environmental targets for this term.  These are listed below:
To bring in healthier snacks and in a plastic container
To use a sports water bottle instead of plastic bottles that can be re-used over and over again
Recycle all used paper and plastic bottles
Save energy by turning off lights and computers

We all need to try to do a little bit to help the environment.  If we can all follow this term’s targets, we will make a small difference to the world we live in. Please try really hard to meet this term’s targets. For more information on the topic, have a look at the following eco-schools website www.eco-schools.org.uk Many thanks for all your support.

A reminder to all boys that there is a competition to design the eco-logo and motto for Northwood Prep.  The design needs to include NP and eco-school and can be completed by hand or on the computer.  The motto can be just a catchy line but needs to include some of our school’s environmental targets.  Please could you spend the time over the holiday producing a piece for one of the competitions.  The entries need to be given to Mrs Johnson during the first week back after half term.

operation christmas child

Firstly I would like to say a great big thank you to all of you who  supported our recent Harvest Festival and MacMillan Coffee Morning.  We managed to raise £634.50 for WaterAid and £681 for MacMillan Cancer Relief.  For every £15 donated to WaterAid, one person with be provided with sanitation, hygiene education and safe water for life, which means we managed to change 42 peoples lives.
We are once again supporting Operation Christmas Child and appeal for your help in sending gifts at Christmas to children abroad who are suffering from neglect, conflict or poverty in their country.
Last year all the children and many of the staff enjoyed compiling the boxes for the young children.  We managed to send 179 shoe boxes full of gifts which were much appreciated by the children.  It was really rewarding to know that we were all helping those who are underprivileged.  Please encourage your child to help you buy the gifts for their shoe box.  If we all bring in one shoe box each just think how many children we will be helping!

If you wish to support this appeal, your child should bring the shoe boxes to school on Friday 2nd November.  Many thanks for your continued support.

sports news

The fixtures have been coming thick and fast over the last fortnight. A most  pleasing aspect has been seeing all boys in Y3 and Y4 represent the school in fixtures against Thorpe House. All of the boys enjoyed the full match day  experience; the coach journey to the ground, followed by the match in front of a packed crowd, and finally the team tea to relax and socialise after the exciting games. The senior teams have enjoyed some  excellent success in their most recent matches against Gayhurst and Thorpe House. The 1st XV scored over 40 points in each match to secure comfortable victories. The points were shared around, with Ammar Malik scoring an excellent hat-trick against Gayhurst.  The 2nd XV have stretched their unbeaten run and registered two hard fought but in the end comfortable    victories. Well done to these boys who will surely be targeting an unbeaten  season now.

Finally congratulations to Nathan Dale, the first boy to complete the Marathon Challenge.
