Welcome back to the new term. It is good to see that the torrential rain cannot dampen the spirits of the boys as they throw themselves wholeheartedly into the“busy-ness” of the New Year.
We hope that you like the new format of NP newsletter and this edition comes with the important news that it will be the last paper version for common consumption: from now on we will be delivering it directly by
e-mail, with paper versions available on request at the school office. This move is motivated by the need to preserve resources as part of our ecological focus at the school.
At this time of the year it is usual for us to announce any staff changes that will be happening in September. We shall be saying goodbye to Mr and Mrs Johnson who have accepted teaching positions in a school in Quito, Ecuador. We will also be bidding farewell to Mr Kenny who will be returning to teach in America. We add our best wishes to these colleagues with our grateful thanks for all that they have achieved on the boys’ behalf.
Boys and staff have returned with a spring in their step after the winter break. Life Skills, clubs and matches have resumed in addition to the academic timetable.
Events this term include House Football, Cross Country and Pancake Races as well as the annual School Art Competition. Ben Reeder-Marlow (Y8RW), James Newman (Y8MS) and Ashil Shah (Y8RW) are Captain of Football, Cross Country and Cricket respectively. The Cricket tour squad are eagerly anticipating their Easter visit to Antigua.
The Staff are looking forward to seeing Year 7 parents at next week’s consultation evenings and we extend best wishes to all our Y8 candidates (and parents!) who are undertaking 13+ entrance and scholarship exams at this time.
A similar amount of preparation, confidence and courage will be required for the Valentine’s disco at School on February 7th. Mr Crook will be passing on tips to boys in ‘Life Skills’! Please enjoy the sample chat up lines below.
The new school term has started well and I would like to welcome Robert Willems (4B) to Northwood Prep.
Winter has also arrived! It is now important that all boys remember to wear school regulation coats, scarves and hats (all named) to school to keep warm on these cold days. Please ask them to remember that when they hang the coat up after being outside, it must be by the loop on their peg as otherwise it will fall onto the floor.
This week there were Year 6 and Year 4 parents’ evenings and a thank you must go to all the parents who attended for a very enjoyable and informative evenings.
Congratulations go to Chaneil Patel who has been nominated for the British Asian Sports Awards.
Congratulations to all the boys for being elected form captain and vice form captain respectively this term. Please see list below
The term has started extremely well and we have been very pleased to welcome Aaron Treon into the Puffins class.
We had a lovely assembly today, when the boys showed us their beautiful winter pictures that they created at home over the holiday. Some boys also recited their winter poem and we were delighted that those boys made an effort to learn the poem for us. We had drama workshops in Junior School yesterday. The theme this term was ‘Outer Space’ and the boys had a great time, as usual. We were very grateful to Year 4 for bringing their Mr. Men stories and puppets to Reception on Tuesday. The boys in both year groups loved it and the photograph shows two boys enjoying ‘Mr. Cool’. Next week we look forward to Year 1’s visit to the Toy Museum and the following week brings Parents’ Evenings for all Junior School parents.
Nursery’s term has started very well too, and they have welcomed Oliver McAulay, Kahil Jariwala and Anay Patel into their ‘family’.
We have also been completing numerous 3+ assessments at nursery in the last couple of weeks and we have almost been overwhelmed by the interest that our move to Merchant Taylors’ has generated.
We have an Open Morning for prospective parents at the Nursery in Northwood on 24th Jan. 9.30-11.00 am.
This time we congratulate Chaneil Patel (Y6), Kavan Kothari (Y5)
Most Improved Pupil
This time we congratulate Manoj Kelshiker (Y8), Rishi Nayan Varodaria (3E)
To encourage further effort and achievement, two cups are awarded to boys in the Senior School each week: Most Valuable Pupil of the week and Most Improved Pupil of the week.
This week Year 5 went for an Art visit to The National Gallery. On arrival, a lady from the Gallery escorted us to the first painting: it depicted the Angel Gabriel coming to tell Mary that she was going to have baby Jesus. The
amazing detail and rich colours filled us with awe.
The second painting was about a travelling group of hunters. They were running and moving throughout the painting. The artist must have needed very dexterous skills to paint such movement. The third painting was a
depiction of how people used to spend their evenings in olden days. An
experiment , showing how long a bird could survive without air, was carried out by a travelling scientist in front of a group of people. The last painting was the famous Van Gogh's Chair with a pipe on it. It was supposed to
represent the idea that Van Gogh got his ideas from looking at ordinary
everyday objects.
Finally, after a superb day, we went to visit the Gallery shop and bought souvenirs ranging from art books to bows and arrows! This was the end of an absolutely fantastic day! Thanks to all the teachers who helped to make this trip possible.
On 3rd January the school hosted a Saracens Training Clinic for our boys in Years 4, 5 and 6. The boys who attended were treated to a day of coaching with the club’s community staff and fully deserved the bag of goodies presented at the end. Martin Mattoo was voted player of the day. Well done to all who attended and braved the cold weather.
The Year 4's each wrote their own Mr Men book and read them to the reception boys. They each designed and made a puppet of their Mr Men character in Art to accompany the book. The reception boys really enjoyed playing with the puppets and listening to the stories.
The football fixture list has started, albeit rather wet under foot.
The 1st XI drew their opener 2-2, Charlie Borralho scoring both goals. In their next match they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Gayhurst.
Our 2nd XI however did secure a 5-0 victory on the same afternoon with Aurele Armstrong grabbing a hat-trick. The other scorers were Max Kellar and Tejas Patel, who scored a magnificent long range effort. The whole of Year 4 and 6 are also in action this week.
The competition is hotting up as the home run to the end of the season begins. The top three managers at the moment are Kiertan Saujani, Abbiraam Indran and that ever reliable judge, Mr. Crook.
A break time FA Cup has started this term for all boys in Years 3 to 8. The teams have been drawn and the action has got under way this week.
Good luck to all teams and I will keep you updated with the tournament.
