Latest News.... |
| It has been a exhilarating week, full of poignancy and magical moments. On Wednesday we welcomed back to school Henry Amar and his wife Ruth as our guests of honour at the official opening of our sports facilities, now to be known as the Henry Amar Sports Centre [pictured below]. |
Henry attended Northwood Prep in the post war years, before going on to MTS and then St.John’s Oxford. He served as a Governor in the 90’s at the school and is now Governor Emeritus and a staunch supporter of his old school. Accompanied by another distinguished member of the class of 52, Mr Brian Levy, Henry regaled us with stories from his time at Terry’s. The day was filled with fun and the boys enjoyed the Soccer spectacular that we laid on, including a photo opportunity with the Barclays Premier League Trophy, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Upen Shah. You will no doubt get more insights from the local press who were out in force. A great day was had by all.
We have also been celebrating another fine year of academic distinction in the 13+ examinations to Senior Schools and we heartily
congratulate all our candidates and their teachers on their outstanding results.
Finally, please continue to join with us in our special celebrations as we plan for the grand opening of the New Barn Theatre. We are having a special
dinner at the House of Commons on the 22nd April in aid of the Theatre
Appeal. There are now only eight tickets left—please speak to the office
before it is too late. The final fundraiser will be a night of Eastern Delight, a dinner dance with an Asian theme, to be held in a marquee on the school grounds, on Friday 6th June. This will be the social event of the year and so please put the date firmly in your diary. Finally, please sponsor Malik Karim, [father of Shakil Karim Y5] who has agreed to run the London Marathon this year. You can sponsor him via

| Key Stage 3 (Y7-8) |
| Whilst Javier Bardem and Tilda Swinton won the best supporting roles in the Oscars 2008, our staff and parents deserve similar praise for helping Year 8 to achieve success at 13+. They have been honoured with ten awards at three schools and places at no less than five different public schools to date. |
Year 7 have returned to new setting arrangements after half-term to ensure similarly thorough preparation for their transfer in 2009. Congratulations to our musicians, poets and artists who contributed to our Recital, Beale Poetry Recitation and our School Art Competition. Ashil Shah (Y8W) edged out Abbiraam Indran (Y7W) in the tie-break of the Africa Challenge. Best wishes to our skiers who hope to conquer the slopes of Alpe d’Huez and to our Year 8 journalists for their Guardian News Day entries. Congratulations to Eden Slack & Adam Green who were selected to represent the county at the Hertfordshire Schools Swimming Gala last Friday.
Reminder: Parents are cordially invited to view the Art Competition with their son in the Sir Christopher Harding Building Tues. 18th and Wed. 19th March 3.50–4.45pm. |

| News from KS2. |
| The last two weeks have been very busy with sports fixtures, pancake races Y3 and Y4 play rehearsals and the final of the Y5 & Y6 House ‘Beale Clear Speaking Competition’. The later was hotly contested and all participants performed well. |
The eventual winner of the Year 5 & 6 competition was Alexander McCormick (6J) and the runner up was Gus Machado (5K). Congratulations to everyone who participated and spoke so clearly. The preparation is now well under way for the Year 3 & 4 production of ‘The Lemonade Kid’ and further information will follow regarding tickets and requests for costumes. The recent music recital gave boys the opportunity to boys to show how they are progressing and there was some superb playing by all the boys involved. Well done to all who performed and thanks to Mr Griffiths for arranging this event. Congratulations go to Thomas McAuley (3E) for being voted player of the week for Fullarians U8’s during half term and to Julian Man (6J) and Nikhil Shah (3E) who have achieved 75 house points and their Gold certificate. Chaneil Patel Y6 won the Key Stage 2 Africa Challenge. Well done. |

| Junior School News |
| Our Book Week last week was a fantastic success. The boys so very much enjoyed all of the activities on offer, particularly Tony Bradman and The Theatre of Widdershins. |
We were also really grateful to the many parents who gave up their time to read stories to the children last week – this is such a worthwhile activity. Our thanks go to: Mrs. Thakrar (Nimai), Mrs. Kapoor (Rohan), Mrs. Speller (Oscar), Mrs. Varodaria (Nikhil-Manav), Mrs. Saunders (Alexander and Harry), Mrs. Manocha (Shobhin), Mrs. Gardner (Christopher), Mrs. Day (Rohan), Mrs. Fernandez (Ishan), Mrs. Morjaria (Anish), Mrs. Mirza (Daanysh), Mrs. Lalani (Kian), Mrs. Thakkar (Aman) and Mrs. Broomhead (Freddie).
The highlight of the week was our book character dressing-up day on Friday and we were thrilled with the inventiveness and creativity of the costumes. Everyone had obviously worked really hard of their outfits (including the staff) and it really showed. Class photographs should be on display on the school website. This week we have really enjoyed the Sports Hall Opening with the arrival of the Premiership Trophy and Y2 boys have had a really good visit to the Florence Nightingale Museum (more details to follow). We would like to wish all the mums a very peaceful day this Mothering Sunday!

| Book Week |
| Another resounding success. Once again, the whole school celebrated bookweek last week. This event has now become a regular and popular fixture in the school calendar. |
Two authors came to visit us: Nursery-Y5 met the prolific and highly entertaining Tony Bradman on Tuesday, whilst Years 6-8 met RAF pilot and top selling fantasy writer Mark Robson on Wednesday.
On Thursday the amazing Theatre Of Widdershins returned with their latest puppet show 'The Elves and the Shoemaker'. Due to popular demand, we are hoping they will return in the autumn, to perform in the new theatre, with their new production 'Rapunzel' and this time parents will be able to share in the fun as well. The dressing up day on Friday was the best one ever. Every boy from Nursery -Y2 came as their favourite book character. There were some lovely original ideas and everyone made a real effort. As for the Egyptian masks and hats in Years 3 & 4, almost every boy came in with truly stunning handmade productions. We were in awe at the range of ideas and techniques used. A huge thank you to staff and parents who helped and support this very busy week including Tessa Douch and team for their refreshments and help at the bookfair. The bookfair sold an incredible £1,500's worth of books and the school has benefitted by receiving £850's worth of free books. It is good to know that almost every boy went home last week with a new book to enjoy. Meanwhile, don't forget the 'Readathon' sponsored read and the tokens from the Nestle cereal boxes. They all need to be handed in by Monday 17th March.

| Old Text Books |
| The eco-club have helped Mrs Johnson sort out all the old text books that are no longer used in school. |
The books are all in a good condition but have been replaced with new up to date versions. They have all been sorted and boxed up in subjects and are going to be sent to third world countries where resources are limited. Some of the books will be taken to Ecuador in the summer with Mr and Mrs Johnson and some will be taken to Phnom Penn in Cambodia by Simon Apsey who comes in to help with Information Technology in school. He has a connection with a school over there. |

| The day the Vikings came to NP |
 |
The day was an integral part of the History studies both classes have been undertaking this term about Vikings. First there was a talk from Thorulf about Viking seafarers, raiders, explorers and traders, followed by the opportunity to learn from Gudrum about home life in Viking times. The boys also took part in a Viking quiz and the morning ended with Thorulf giving a demonstration of how to make Viking chain mail armour and also how to mint Viking coins.
In the afternoon Thorulf talked to the boys about a range of Viking armour and weapons including the spear, sword and battle-axe. He demonstrated his skill with a sword and battle-axe, attacking a melon with great gusto! Some of the boys had the chance to try on Thorulf’s chain mail armour and to find out just how heavy it was!
The day ended with the boys trying their hand at Viking spear wrestling and finally a mock battle. Both Forms faced each other in a shield wall and on the given command attacked each other with tremendous war cries and much enthusiasm. However, it was decided that despite their best efforts the battle honours were even and it was a draw. The boys all declared the day a great success and are now busy writing their own reports of the day for their Viking Project Books. |

| Fantasy Football |
| Latest update.... |
Kiertan Saujani, Kellan Ghelani and Abbiraam Indran make up the top three at the moment in the Fantasy League. As I lumber in 35th place, my support lies firmly with Mr. Crook, who is hot on the heels on the top three and is top of the staff league. |

| Sports News |
| The last few weeks have undoubtedly contained the largest concentration of fixtures I can remember at Northwood Prep; in the space of nine school days every boy in Years 3 to 8 played at least one fixture for the school. This strong ‘Sport for all’ philosophy has been really rewarding to observe and seeing a 5th XI in action and a host of D and E teams has given many boys some great memories. |
Highlights from this period include the Under 9 teams enjoying three victories out of five against Haberdashers. Azaan Kassam helped himself to a hat-trick for the D’s who recorded the most comfortable of the victories. On the same afternoon Aurele Armstrong scored four goals in the 2nd XI’s 4-3 win over Chesham. Elsewhere the Under 10A team were highly impressive in beating Haberdashers’ 1-0. We look forward to seeing how they fare in the Tournament we host on Sunday 9th March. |
