Northwood Prep Eco-Programme

Northwood Prep is trying to reduce the impact it has on the local community by carrying out a number of schemes to help the environment.  Below are some of the things that we are currently involved with.

The school is involved in a paper recycling scheme called ‘Recycling for learning,’ which is based in Hemel Hempstead.  Our paper is collected and taken to the Paper Mill where it is converted into more paper.  The Year 4’s have been visiting the Mill for 2 years now.  Boys in the Year 3 and 4 eco-club help Mrs Johnson to sort the paper ready for

Printer cartridges are now being recycled at school.  At the end of last term a large box was sent to a company in Sheffield where they re-use the cartridges.

An eco-club is run for those boys in Years 3 and 4.  Every fortnight the boys help to sort out all the school’s paper for recycling.  On other weeks they help to sort out the plastic bottles, feed the worms, and help with the new bird feeding centre.

A wormery was introduced to the school last year and has proven very popular with all the boys.  All of the biodegradable snacks left over from break time are given to the hungry worms.  The worms produce fertilizer which is then used on the school grounds.

As well as paper we can now recycle cardboard, glass, tin and plastic.  Waste from all areas of the school can now be sorted and placed in the correct recycling bin.  The bins are collected by the local council in a fortnightly basis.  The eco-club help to sort out all the plastic bottle and put them in the correct bin.

the Recycle for learning team to collect it.  There are many recycling bins placed around the building to encourage pupils and staff to recycle all their left over paper.

An eco-action team has been set up at Northwood Prep.  At least two boys from each year group in senior school make up the team.  The boys were elected on merit as members and represent the rest of their year group.  The team meet fortnightly and discuss relevant environmental issues.

Eco-Action Team

The school has recently purchased a bird feeding centre.  Boys showed an interest in the school’s pupil forum, the eco-club and the eco-action team so one was purchased.  The station has been placed near the weather station at the back of the school, so that the birds can be watched from both the junior and senior school classrooms without being disturbed.  It will hopefully attract a range of birds.
